Crew A Ship

Crew a ship in Nelson’s Navy

This exciting schools programme for Key Stage 1 and 2, provides pupils with a hands on experience of being one of the crew of Nelson’s Navy in your school hall or classroom and can be used to enhance a visit to HMS Victory.

Artefacts help to recreate the atmosphere of life on board ship in the year 1805 and provide an imaginative stimulus with a great deal of fun as well as sound educational value.

Your pupils (crew) will be engaged in:
Working as a team.
Hoisting sails, working aloft.
Passing barrels, powder monkeys.
Cannon drill.
Knots, navigation and making rope.
All the excitement of life at sea.

The programme will give your pupils a memorable and worthwhile experience to build on.

The programme is presented by Derrick Babington who is a freelance storyteller and Education C0-ordinator working with schools on the Isle of Wight and the Mainland. Over the last 12 years Derrick has created and developed a number of ‘Heading On’ interactive classroom programmes that sow the seeds for further studies and helps to spark pupils imagination.

Derrick, also known by the nickname ‘Bones’ is a member of HMS Victory’s Cutter Crew, and is a volunteer crew member of the Tall Ships Youth Trust.

(website: www.tallships.org) and brings his enthusiasm and experience of being at sea and working aloft on a Tall Ship into the classroom.
