Students from this age group can benefit hugely from visits to places like HMS Victory. If you would like help ensuring your visit has strong curricular links then please contact the Learning Development Officer. We have a new workshop available to Key Stage 3 this year. Developed in partnership with Woodlands Community College in Southamton Martime Maths helps children to use maths in a practical context whilst learning about HMS Victory.
Maritime Maths Target Group: KS3
Venue: HMS Victory Length of Session: 1.5 hrs Curriculum Links: Maths, History, Geography Price: £3 per pupil Discovery Visit + £40 per workshop fee for up to 27 pupils Using the ship as a resource this session aims to show pupils how maths can be applied for practical tasks whilst also learning about life on board an 18th century warship. Pupils can take part in a ‘voyage’ looking at supplying the ship, setting sail, fighting a battle and finally calculating the prize! The workshop focuses on developing problem solving skills and covers subjects such as angles, weights and measures, bearings and navigation. There are also ideas for lead in and follow up activities available.
'A fantastic learning experience based around Maths (I never knew maths could be so much fun!!!).'
What else can you do?
If you would like to use HMS Victory for studying different subjects then get in touch to talk about what we can offer you. Forelands Middle School took part in a poetry workshop on board and had a great time using the ship as inspiration to help them create their own poems. Click here to find out more about the workshop and read some of their work.
Although we don't currently offer workshops aimed at Key Stage 4 and above we are keen to offer learning opportunities for all age groups. Get in contact with the Learning Development Officer to discuss the needs of your group.
